Atwater's Stance on Social Justice

In light of the many events of the past year (years), the loss of life, and the horrific scenes of brutality and violence many of us have witnessed either on the news or through social media, we should ask, "What is Social Justice?"

Social justice is [defined as] a view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.”

Historically, the idea of social justice is that all people should have equal access to wealth, health, justice, privileges, and opportunities regardless of their legal, political, economic, or other status. Social justice is a topic that some people may find uncomfortable. By surfacing issues like race, gender, and income, we begin to have an honest conversation about the state of affairs in our country. Still, it is understandable that these topics are difficult to address.  Positive proposals to affect fair outcomes many times comes with resistance to change.

Atwater Avenue Elementary School staff firmly believes in promoting the idea of social justice—it is part of our S.T.E.A.M. vision.  We are committed to supporting instruction and conversations that promote diversity, equality and the creation of a more just society.  We stand against racism and inequality. We stand against any remaining institutionalized systems of oppression. We can no longer ignore legitimate forms of injustice.

We will stand strong with our community in our resolve to fight these injustices. Social justice isn’t just a cause; it’s a celebration of the greatness and diversity of our country and our society.
